Spiritual Emergency: Embracing Unexpected Transformation

6 day-residential workshop (in English) integrating lectures with deep experiential practice of Holotropic Brethawork

with Tav Sparks and Grof Transpersonal Training staff

Sant Feliu de Guixols, Girona, Spain

March 28-April 2, 2010

Spiritual Emergency

This workshop is addressed to people interested in Transpersonal Psychology, in modern consciousness research and in their own personal growth. And also for those who want to train to become Holotropic Breathwork facilitators.

Spiritual Emergency: Embracing Unexpected Transformation

Many people go through episodes of crisis of deep meaning that interfere with daily routine and with personal relationships. For some, those changes are progressive and relatively soft, but for others they can be dramatic and make every day functioning difficult. Some of these crises could involve radical transformations and represent a challenge both for the person who lives them and for those who witness the process.
Stan and Christina Grof coined the term “spiritual emergency” to allude to crises that carry a deep personal transformation, frequently associated with spiritual opening. With this name they want to evoke, also, the positive potential of these states, suggesting that they are an opportunity to “emerge”, to rise to a higher level of psychological functioning and even of spiritual awareness.
Properly understood and supported, these crises can result in important psychological changes and consciousness evolution.
The focus of this module, in the framework of Transpersonal Psychology, is the understanding and treatment of these crises of transformation known as spiritual emergencies, as one of the major contributions from the Holotropic perspective.

Whether you are a professional or a layperson, someone interested in working with people in transformation crises, or primarily in your own growth, this module offers a rich experience and valuable information.
In addition to differentiating between psychosis and spiritual emergency, we’ll also explore the intensely practical aspects of who, in these kinds of crises, can benefit from Holotropic Breathwork, and how best to work with them in their emergencies.
The workshop includes:

  • discussion of the concept of spiritual emergency
  • its manifestations and forms,
    historical and anthropological perspectives,
    treatment strategies,
and work with family and friends.

Important

To participate in the workshop it is not necessary to have previous experience in Holotropic Breathwork. It is required to complete a brief confidential medical form. If you wish to continue with the Grof Transpersonal Training, this module is one of the four mandatory required. Modules can be taken independently: to take this module does not represent a commitment to continue the training. All modules are given in English.

How is a Grof Transpersonal Training workshop:

During the course of the six-day workshop, each participant will experience two sessions of Holotropic Breathwork as experiencer (or "breather), and two sessions as partner (or "sitter"). Besides the four breathwork experiences and the topics covered, there will be art, music, dancing, film, and integration during the workshop.
Groups are international, both GTT staff and participants come from diferent parts of the world. Being in Spain we also have also a large number of Spanish participants. It is an experience of deep and respectful work, but the athmosphere is relaxed and casual. Meals are buffet style, very abundant and of excellent quality and variety, suited for vegetarians and no-vegetarians. Cilmate in Spain is usually mild and often the wheather allows for meals in the outside gardens and terraces. If you want to see some pictures of the last workshop in Spain click here:

This module will take place April 5th to 10th, 2009, at the beautiful hotel Eden Roc, in Sant Feliu de Guixols, in a small cove of the Costa Brava in Spain. We will begin on Monday the 25th around 10 in the morning and will finish before lunch on Saturday the 30th.

Additional accommodation for extra nights: For those of you who make a long journey it could be a good idea to arrive the night before. That extra night is not included in the price of the module. If you wish to arrive earlier or stay longer, please contact us and we will help you with the hotel arrangements.

Please find below a list of useful telephones and addresses.

Have a good journey!

Travelling by plane: Quite likely you will have to fly to Barcelona (120 km away from the hotel) if you come from outside Spain. There is an Airportbus every 20 min. to the center of Barcelona. You can take a bus (departing every hour) at the Estación Norte of Barcelona to Sant Feliu de Guixols (it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes; Bus company “La Sarfa”, www.sarfa.com). Once in Feliu de Guixols, take a taxi to the hotel (about 5 minutes, aprox. 7 euros).

Another interesting option is that you could get really cheap prices for European flights connecting with some important European cities from and to Girona airport (very close to the hotel retreat) in Ryanair. Their web is www.ryanair.com once you are in their page click on the upper right hand side “Book now” and you will find the possible connexions to and from Girona.

If you are travelling by plane in Spain (and from some European cities) you could try to get a flight to Girona (about 30 km from the hotel). At Girona there are buses every hour to Platja D’Aro (same “La Sarfa”), the ride is about 40 minutes and costs 6€ approximately. Once you get to Feliu de Guixols take a taxi to the hotel (about 5 minutes, aprox. 7 euros).

Travelling by car to the hotel: Well communicated from anywhere in Spain by national road or highway. Take exit 9 in Autopista A-7 Barcelona - Girona (exit Platja D’Aro), it is well signposted. From the highway exit it is about 30 km to Feliu de Guixols.

Travelling by train: The closest train station is in Girona (30 km). For those of you travelling by train/bus to Girona, the bus station is right in front of the train station. At Girona there are buses every hour to Platja D’Aro (bus company “La Sarfa”) the ride takes about 40 minutes and costs 6€ approximately. Once you get to Feliu de Guixols take a taxi to the hotel (about 5 minutes, aprox. 7 euros).

Meals: All meals are included in the price of the module, beginning with the lunch of the 5th, to the breakfast of the 10th. The service is buffet style so you can choose vegetarian or non vegetarian dishes according to your preference.

What to bring: For all activities is appropriate to wear comfortable and casual clothing. For the breathwork sessions please bring eyeshades (or scarf), easy to take off shoes, and some shawl. If you wish to bath at the beautiful pool (open depending on weather) or in the ocean (there are a beautiful beaches), you need a towel, swimsuit and sandals, a sun protection product and a hat.

Weather: The climate is mild. April temperatures usually do not drop below 12º C and max. temperatures are around 24º C. Most days are sunny. The hotel is heated and air-conditioned.
